Best team on the Gold Coast
This past weekend was one for the history books, as the Galeb Brothers BJJ competitors from kids to adults, friends & family members all showed up to the Carrara Indoor Stadium to witness a great day of jiu jitsu. For the very first time, we won the Best Team Overall title, proving we are among the best academies in the state and country.
Results:
Best Team Overall
Best Kids Team
Best Female Team
2nd place Male Team
The kids were first to step foot on the mat, and they all left it out there, giving 100% during their matches. We had kids from all four South East QLD academies representing the team. It was the first competition for some and another one to add to the list for others but everyone fought very well. A lot of great results and lessons learnt, and a lot of proud professors, coaches & parents. The great performance from all our kids earned us the Best Kids Team!
Our adult students didn't disappoint, as majority of our students were white or blue belts competing from the light featherweight division (-64kg) all the way up to ultra heavy (+110kg). Mitchell Yeo of Galeb Brothers Southside competed in the adult division for the first time and won gold. In the featherweight division, the podium was full of Galeb Brothers students from Gold Coast & Helensvale (1st Thiago Vallim, 2nd Casey Swan, 3rd Russell Spain). Thiago, also had a double gold performance by backing up in the No Gi division and winning gold.
The stacked 15 man lightweight division had some very exciting matches. Jack Willsher (Gold Coast) earned his spot on the podium in 3rd place, whilst Fraser Morrison & Matthew East fell short after some tough battles. Lee Gardner claimed the 2nd place in the Master 1 Lightweight division.
Dylan Hadfield was on his way to gold submitting his first two matches before just falling short to a tough competitor in the final and losing via points. Mark Hopewell shook off the nerves to compete for the first time and although didn't get the result he was looking for, still learnt a lot from the experience. As we always say its either you win or learn.
The girls didn't disappoint as they took out 1st place for Best Female Team. Belinda Gardner hasn't competed in a few years and felt like she never left after some very exciting matches. (1st No Gi weight & open weight, 1st Gi open weight & 2nd Gi weight). Winnie Lai claimed the top spot of the podium in her gi weight division. First time competitor of Galeb Brothers Helensvale, Kirstie Donnelly impressed the fans with a double gold performance. 3 fights & 3 submissions to go with it, a great way to finish up your first competition.
A great day for the team with some awesome results. Winning our first ever team title and at home. Thank you to all who went to support and for those who couldn't make it but sent positive vibes.
